Growth factors and growth hormone-derived compounds

Growth factors and growth hormone-derived compounds groups 6 indexed compounds. Also written as IGF-1 analogues, growth hormone derived peptides, myostatin inhibitors.

Definition

This class groups the growth factors, growth factor fragments and growth hormone-derived proteins that research-peptide catalogues list alongside the secretagogues, most of which are proteins rather than peptides and are labelled as such on their pages. A 2010 Endocrinology minireview describes mechano growth factor as a putative product of IGF-I gene expression, a 1989 Biochemical Journal paper describes the des(1-3) form of IGF-I and its escape from IGF-binding proteins, a 1990 Science paper identifies follistatin as the activin-binding protein of rat ovary, and a 1989 New England Journal of Medicine paper reports recombinant human growth hormone in adults with growth hormone deficiency.

Class-level mechanism as reported

The members act on two axes rather than one receptor. The IGF-I derived members act through the IGF-1 receptor: a 2003 Mechanisms of Ageing and Development paper reports des(1-3)IGF-I mediated activation of Akt-1 and p70 S6K in mouse muscle, and a 2011 paper in the same journal reports that the mechano growth factor E peptide activates human muscle progenitor cells. The activin-axis members antagonise myostatin: a 2004 Developmental Biology paper reports that follistatin complexes myostatin and antagonises its inhibition of myogenesis, and a 2017 Muscle and Nerve paper describes ACE-031 as a myostatin inhibitor.
