Melanocortin receptor peptides

Melanocortin receptor peptides groups 4 indexed compounds. Also written as melanocortin agonists, melanotropic peptides, alpha-MSH analogues.

Definition

Melanocortin receptor peptides are analogues of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that act at melanocortin receptors. A 2000 International Journal of Impotence Research paper reports human studies with melanocortin receptor agonists, and a 1996 Life Sciences paper describes melanotan-II as a cyclic melanotropic peptide evaluated in a pilot phase I clinical study.

Class-level mechanism as reported

Members differ in receptor selectivity across the melanocortin receptor subtypes, and the retrieved literature separates pigmentary from central effects. A 2015 New England Journal of Medicine trial report covers afamelanotide in erythropoietic protoporphyria, while a 2007 Journal of Sexual Medicine review covers preclinical central nervous system effects of bremelanotide.
